Today I went to work for the margin lending team for three hours. Margin lending is essentially a system where people or groups put stock up as security for loans. They're borrowing money against money they've invested. When the price of stock falls, as it has been frequently in the past few weeks, then someone has to call the owner of the loans and tell them they owe the bank money. Guess who volunteered to do that job today. Go on. Guess.
I should have realised people don't like being told they're a great deal poorer. I got a few snippy answers and one guy spent a full minute screaming at me. When the customers get angry with my usual reaction is to sit there composing sentences that'd send them over the edge, make them real mad instead of just venting. Not anything aggressive or anything. Just stuff like 'well I could help you but I've decided not to because of the way you've behaved.' And then I sit there, daring myself to say it. And that's how I'm gunna lose my job if I keep turning up tired.
